Der Grund, warum wir uns in England hauptsächlich an der Küste aufgehalten haben, ist der, dass wir in Deutschland kaum welche haben. Der zweite Grund ist der, dass der englische Wald (zumindest aus deutscher Sicht) eine Enttäuschung war. Zugegeben, wenn es nur um Bäume geht, haben die Engländer schönere, ältere und eindrucksvollere, gerade in Parks und an Straßen. Englands Wälder hingegen sind, nun ja, überschaubar.
England ist eben eine alte Seefahrernation und die haben von jeher immer zu wenig Holz gehabt, denn sie haben ständig irgendwelche neuen Flotten gebraucht und gebaut. Das kann die nationale Forstwirtschaft und Holzindustrie schon leicht mal überfordern, das heißt, es konnte. Da Schiffe heute kaum noch aus Holz gebaut werden, hätten die Wälder die Gelegenheit, sich nicht nur zu erholen, sondern eigentlich auch die zu wachsen. Aber dann müssten einige Großgrundbesitzer und dessen Pächter also Bauern oder Schaf- und Rinderzüchter auf Einkommen verzichten. So wie Deutschland war England einst auch völlig von Wäldern bedeckt und bevor die Dürre der letzten Jahre uns erreichte, waren unsere westlichen und südlichen Wälder ebenfalls mit Moos bedeckt. Heutzutage muss man lange danach suchen, ich schätze mal hüben wie drüben.
The reason why we spent most of our time in England on the coast is that we hardly have any in Germany. The second reason is that the English forest was a disappointment (at least from a German point of view). Admittedly, when it comes to trees, the English have more beautiful, older and impressive ones, especially in parks and on roads. England’s forests, on the other hand, are, well, manageable.
England is just an old seafaring nation and they have always had too little timber, because they have constantly needed and built new fleets. That can easily overtax the national forestry and timber industry, that is, it could. Since ships today are hardly built out of wood, the forests would not only have the opportunity to recover, but also to grow. But then some large landowners and their leaseholders would have to forego income for farmers or sheep and cattle breeders. Just like Germany, England was once completely covered by forests and before the drought of recent years reached us, our western and southern forests were also covered with moss. Nowadays you have to search for it for a long time, I guess over here as well as over there.
